in vitro Capability

Nutrition lab imageWithin the Nutrition Unit you will also find a state-of-the-art dual function laboratory.

Haematology and biochemical testing
For blood/plasma analysis, enabling rapid processing of samples collected during intervention studies and their subsequent analysisfor a whole range of biochemical measures including: glucose, insulin, cholesterol, and a range of gut hormones.

In vitro bioavailability/bioaccessibility investigations
Offering a market-leading service in the understanding and modelling of human digestive processes through our extensive expertise in the human gastro-intestinal tract. Our range of innovative laboratory-based human gut simulations can be applied to all food digestion needs. These physiologically relevant in vitro tools can be applied to a wide range of product development, including novel and functional foods, foods, delivery of nutrition and bioavailability of active compounds and nutrients.

This in vitro laboratory provides the capability to understand how food structures are broken down during digestion to enable the design of healthier foods, and hence maximise beneficial health effects.

A variety of routine satiety projects have also been run on a confidential basis for food industry clients to substantiate satiety claims.
