Bone Health: Opportunities and Challenges for the Food Industry

    Description

It is estimated that 20% of the European population is over the age of 65 years, a figure that is expected to increase to 30% by 2030. One of the key health concerns of an ageing population is optimising bone health and this, together with an increased focus on children’s health, is leading manufacturers to invest in the development of products intended to build and maintain strong bones.

Leatherhead’s one-day conference Bone Health – Opportunities and Challenges for the Food Industry, held in collaboration with the National Osteoporosis Society, will deliver a diverse and exciting programme combining speakers from academia and industry to give up-to-date research on bone health and the importance of nutrition in maintaining healthy bones. Speakers from industry will discuss developments in the ingredients sector, and research showing their efficacy, together with the latest new global innovations in products launched on the bone health platform. Experts from Leatherhead’s regulatory and market intelligence departments will discuss the current status and limitations on bone health claims and the potential growth of this market. Further case study presentations will demonstrate how these trends are shaping manufacturer’s developments. Overall, this conference will give a complete overview of bone health, one of the most promising areas of development in functional foods.

    09.10  Overview of osteoporosis
Professor Roger Francis, Professor of Geriatric Medicine at Newcastle University; Consultant Physician at Freeman Hospital; Chair of the National Osteoporosis Society’s Medical Board

Osteoporosis is characterised by a reduction in the amount of bone in the skeleton, associated with skeletal fragility and an increased risk of fractures after minor trauma.
The three major fragility fractures are those of the forearm, spine and hip, but fractures of the humerus, tibia, pelvis and ribs are also common. The lifetime risk of fracture for a 50 year old woman in the UK is 53%, compared with 20% for a 50 year old man. Fragility fractures are a major cause of mortality, morbidity and health and social service expenditure in older people, but this is particularly the case for hip fractures.

The risk of fracture is determined by skeletal risk factors, such as bone density, bone turnover, trabecular architecture and skeletal geometry, but also by non-skeletal factors associated with falling. The management of osteoporosis should therefore include strategies to improve bone strength and to reduce the risk of falls. Although lifestyle measures may have a beneficial effect on bone density loss and the risk of falls, a number of treatments for osteoporosis have been shown to reduce the risk of fractures by up to 70%.
09.55  Food, nutrition and bone health: what do we know?
Dr Ailsa Welch, Senior Lecturer in Nutritional Epidemiology at University of East Anglia; Member of the National Osteoporosis Society’s Nutrition and Lifestyle Forum

Osteoporosis (reduced bone density) makes bones more fragile and likely to break (fracture) and this is important for the UK as our population is ageing rapidly, with an estimated 25 million people who will be over the age of 50 by 2020. Costs to UK government and National Health Service are around £2.0 billion per year. So finding the causes of osteoporosis and fractures and of treatments for prevention is important. Dr Welch's talk will cover both established knowledge of the relationship between food, nutrition and osteoporosis and fractures, as well as a review of the most recent scientific developments.
