Sensory Ring Testing

Sensory Ring TestingLeatherhead's Sensory and Consumer department is launching a new Panel Ring Testing service in collaboration with QI Statistics. This service will enable manufacturers to benchmark the performance of their sensory assessors with industry to help ensure they produce high-quality data.

The Leatherhead/QI Statistics Panel Ring Test enables sensory departments to screen assessors for sensitivity and descriptive ability of taste and odour stimuli, as well as compare assessors’ performance with other sensory panels. This will help to identify strengths and weaknesses of both individual assessors and whole panels so that additional training can be provided where necessary. The service can be used to train new assessors to identify certain tastes and odours, as well as existing assessors as part of their regular panel training.

The available tests are:

The tests are conducted at the client’s premises by the client’s panel leader, with full support from Leatherhead Food Research.

For the basic taste sensitivity and profiling tests, Leatherhead will provide a pack containing samples ready for dilution, coded cups, forms and instruction sheets; completed questionnaires are returned to Leatherhead for analysis. The tests are carried out with multiple panels simultaneously providing you with an overview of your expert sensory panel compared with other expert sensory panels in industry.

Testing is carried out twice a year, with all analysis being conducted by QI Statistics and Leatherhead.

For the odour recognition test, a variety of odour vials will be provided, containing different odours, at a range of concentrations. These pots are ready to use with ballot papers and instructions. Odour tests can be carried out by individual companies whenever suitable.
